Character Information: Yu-Gi-Oh! Wiki
Personality: [[cw: child abuse, patricide, suicide/suicidal ideation]]
Marik Ishtar is obnoxious.
Simultaneously a bratty, spoiled little brother and a curious young man who literally grew up under a rock, Marik insists on getting what he wants - and he wants nothing short of "everything". The world remains an endless source of wonder and entertainment for him, and after eleven years of being trapped he's running full speed ahead into freedom...or driving, as he fell hard into Cool Rebellious Motorcycle Culture and has not looked back. Marik wants to go all the places and do all the things. He's a kid in a candy store and the candy store is "the entire surface of the Earth".
What's more, he's a multitasking kid in a candy store who's actively looking to grab as much candy as possible. Marik has a bright, active mind, constantly thinking up (overly) complicated plans to achieve his goals, and no sense of personal space. Kazuki Takahashi's original concept for Marik was "a rude guy who barges into people's minds", and "barge" is a very good Marik verb. He drives his motorcycle recklessly, heckles and backseat-drives when others duel, and generally Has Opinions that clearly The World Must Know. Marik insists on absolute control of all situations as his only guarantee of personal freedom, and Marik knows best.
He's also very good at ensuring he gets his way. A born manipulator who offloads his emotional labor onto others, Marik prefers to pull strings behind the scenes. He's never seen an opportunity he didn't try to seize, and the Millennium Rod's mind-control powers enable him to use others as game pieces. Even when he's killing people in cold blood as the head of the Ghouls, his trading-card organized crime ring, he uses the Rod to force his victims to self-destruct instead of murdering them with his own hands. He also is a shameless cheat, using a variety of gadgets and psychological tricks in pursuit of his goals. He justifies his villainous acts with mental gymnastics he undertakes to convince himself that, even as he rebels, he is being a loyal Tombkeeper. Marik talks a big game but shirks personal responsibility. He wants to have his cake and eat it too.
Pity about that utter lack of self-reflection. And that fatalistic streak. Being a Tombkeeper has shaped every facet of Marik's personality, from his zest for life born of deprivation to his self-centered outlook as the heir of a narrow and narrow-minded society, and his family's dogmatic commitment to their mission rears its head when he learns the truth about his father's death. Marik's solution to "turns out I killed my father" is not to wonder why he might have created an alternate personality that would do such a thing. Instead he immediately switches targets, labeling himself a "monster", and attempts to avenge his father's death by killing himself. "We're both guilty", he tells his dark half, simultaneously accepting and rejecting his own emotions, "so we'll both pay." Marik solves his problems with ruthless finality and entirely too many dramatics.
Fortunately, his family is having none of his nonsense. With their encouragement, Marik overcomes his alternate personality by deciding he's going to live on, no matter what. This determination to have a future has driven him onward from the beginning, enabling him to bounce back from failed plans (though some of that might be the lack of self-awareness, again), and he's able to embrace that flexible yet unyielding optimism as the core of his character. By renouncing his hatred and his destructive urges, he becomes truly free.
This is not to say that Marik has become a well-adjusted person. He's still deathly afraid of the dark and bears phobias of knives, fire, and bondage from the Tombkeepers' initiation. He has never had an opportunity make real friends before, either, and I'm not sure he knows how to do it - he's only ever used people as pawns, and doesn't seem to feel any remorse about that, so fumbling through forming real relationships might take some time. Anyone who befriends him will need to be patient with the fact that at heart he is a needy, self-centered little kid.
Still, things are looking up! He is living with his family in Egypt, the Pharaoh has gone to his eternal rest, and Marik's duty as a Tombkeeper has been fulfilled. From now on, he is going to live only in the light. The monster inside of him is gone for good.
Insert dramatic chipmunk of foreboding here.
